"The Heavenly and Primal" is the tenth and final episode of the first season of Marco Polo. It is the tenth episode of the series overall. It was written by executive producer John Fusco and directed by John Maybury.

Plot[]

Marco's ingenuity - and loyalty - is put to the ultimate test when Kublai takes a violent and bold step in his quest to become the emporer of the world.

Marco Polo is released from the dungeon, on the account he will build a siege engine (trebuchet). Kublai Khan plans to use the engines on the walled city Xiangyang. The Khan's army advances on the walled city with Marco's new machines. They try them out, but they fail. But Marco Polo tries again and they hit the wall of the city, out of the reach of archers' arrows. After a full night of battering at the wall of the city, it collaspes. The Khan's army charge at the gap but are held off by hand cannons, one of which wounds Prince Jingim. Polo leads the remaining forces towards the gap and force back the chinese into the city. Meanwhile the Emperor escapes, but Jia Sidao stays behind. Marco Polo enters the palace but is quickly dispatched by Sidao. Fortunately for Polo, he is saved by One Hundred Eyes. After a brief swordfight, both man continue into a brutal hand to hand brawl. One Hundred Eyes wins after disabling Sidao with his Praying Mantis style then cutting Sidao's neck with a sword. After One Hundred Eyes helps Polo back up, Kublai Khan comes in and sits on the throne, becoming one step closer to the Emporer of the world. During the night Mei Lin escapes her quarters and finds a detailed painting of Ahmad sitting the throne, with the Khan's head in his hand. Ahmad appears behind her, asking of her opinion. Her answer is that it is exquisite.

  • Starring cast member Pierfrancesco Favino (Niccolò Polo) is not credited and does not appear in this episode.
  • This episode is the final appearance of starring cast member Chin Han (Jia Sidao) due to the death of his character. The actor appears as a guest star in the second season episode "Whitehorse".
